Pontiac Steering Wheels

The 1941 and 1955 Pontiac Steering Wheels shown are representative of typical Pontiac Steering Wheels from this era. We have molds for almost all Steering Wheels from 1937 through 1968, including the Clear Plastic Steering Wheels of the 1960's, and we are always making new molds.
To understand my process in recasting steering wheels, please refer to the web page labeled PROCESS.

Process:
I remove all of the old plastic, bead blast the rim reinforcing ring and paint it the same color as the plastic. For 1941 to 1948 wheels, we clean and polish the flat stainless steel banjo blades. We also bead blast the hub and prime it. Through my proprietary process, I cast on a specially formulated thermoset UV stable urethane plastic in the original configuration without loss of the original detail. The urethane does not shrink, crack, turn yellow or change colors.

The steering wheel frame is placed into the appropriate mold. The clear liquid urethane is tinted to the desired color and added to the mold. Upon completion of the curing process, the plastic is heat treated, sanded and polished. The color is uniform throughout the plastic and the finished product is polished plastic, not a painted wheel. The molded plastic is one complete casting, there are no joints.

Condition as received, original plastic is so deteriorated that it is falling off the steering wheel frame.

The old plastic was totally removed, the steel frame has been sand blasted and primer coated.  The new Urethane plastic has been molded onto the frame as per the original Pontiac design.  The new plastic has been hand sanded and the steering wheel was coated with a UV inhibitor.  The steering wheel was again hand sanded and polished.
